Why Is Authentic Ginkgo Biloba Extract Hard to Find in the U.S. Market?

From January to November 2025, the unit price of ginkgo biloba extract exported from China to the U.S. plummeted to only $38.7, a 21.6% sharp drop from $51.2 in 2024. Behind this cliff-like price decline lies the contradictory dilemma of "low-price involution" and "scarcity of authentic products" in the U.S. market.

The U.S. market is far more price-sensitive to ginkgo biloba extract than European countries. In 2025, the import unit prices of Germany, Poland and other European nations remained above $80, while U.S. buyers’ persistent price-cut demands have put compliant enterprises in a dilemma where "producing authentic products is bound to result in losses". The core value of ginkgo biloba extract lies in the compliant content of terpene lactones and flavonol glycosides, and achieving purification standards requires high investment in raw material screening, testing and production equipment costs.

Under the pressure of low-price competition, some suppliers have resorted to shoddy substitutes: replacing purified extract with ordinary ginkgo leaf powder, adding synthetic flavonoids to fake compliance, or mixing other plant extracts to cut costs. To control procurement costs, U.S. purchasers passively choose low-cost sources, creating a vicious cycle of "low prices forcing inferior quality, and inferior quality exacerbating low prices". Coupled with the lack of targeted entry inspection mechanisms in the U.S. market, inferior products have flowed in in large quantities. Ultimately, U.S. customers are caught in a market predicament where they "want to buy authentic products at low prices but encounter fake ones everywhere".
